Peter Blain b. 1871 was my grandfather. He was one of a quite large family in the Greenock area. His siblings and his children are indicated here, but I have given no more recent information in this set of tree files.

Peter's father, William Blain, was born in Stranraer, son of William Blain and Mary Maxwell and last of a family spread over 25 years with births registered in Inch and Stranraer; after 1841 the family left the area and some later appeared in Greenock. I have little about them as there are very many Blains and Maxwells in the area and north into Ayrshire. Mary Philip or Philips, Peter's mother, was from a Leith family and this has been traced considerably further, although one key link is unfortunately speculative. This relates to the birth of James Philip round 1779. and whether I have found the 'right' James Philip - I have so far been unable either to demonstrate or to disprove this.

Information pre-1855 is primarily from Old Parochial Records, Apprenticeship and Burgess records, etc. Where there is no reliable information this is indicated. Material on the children of James Philip b. 1800 comes from cousins Colin and Hermina.
