An Adam Keir was made prentice to William Scott, Baxter, apparently 5
Feb 1662.
"Keir, Adam, son to late Adam K., in Hukstoun, with William Scott, baster
5 Feb. 1662."
He was later made burgess, apparently in right of this prenticeship.
Took prentice - Allan, Wm , s. to dec. James A. in Park, within the
parochin of Linlithgow, p. to Adam Keir, baxter 16 June 1675
Took prentice - Rutherford, Thomas, second s. to Wm R., later bailie in
Hedburgh, now writier in Hawick, p. to Adam Keir, baxter (B.) 24 Sept
1690.
Entered as Guild Brother 31 October 1694. The text reads:
Keir, Adam, G. present deacon of the baxters*, B. of before, as p. to
umq. Wm Scot, late deacon of the baxters, B. and G. (5 Feb 1662),
gratis, by act of C. of 12 Sept, 31 Oct. 1694.
Another entry gives a reason for the granting of B&G gratis, 'for providing
bread for the last sacrament', with again the date of 12th Sept. 1694.
There is an entry for an Adam Keir 'baxter by r. of w. Helen, Dr. to late
John Cleghorne, baxter, B. 24 Aug 1667.

*'Present' meaning in 1690s or early 1700s. Volume 8 of the register of
Burgesses and Guild Brethren contains entries from 1697-1703..
