e balance of his mind was disturbed. Occupation at time of death was Iro

Beswick Man's Farewell Note
After writing a farewell note that he was "too ill to be knocked about a
ny longer: it seems that nobody want's me. I cannot stand it any longer a
nd do not wish to die in the workhouse" a Beswick man gassed himself. A
t the inquest on Friday, on John Lidster(60), an unemployed Iron Moulde
r of Power Street, Beswick the Manchester city coroner (Mr. Jessel Ryecro
ft) said the man's widow had nothing to reproach herself about as she ha
d apparently reached a time when she had, had enough of his conduct. Qui
te within her rights. "He appears to have blamed his wife for not takin
g him back home," said Mr. Ryecroft but Mrs. Lidster was quite within he
r rights in not taking him back having regard to whad had happened in th
e past, she had, had many separations from him but made it up with her
. Thy had, had 14 children and it seems for that because of the childre
n and for there sake he gave him another chance each time. Apparently h
e continued to knock his wife about and to be quarrelsome. He seems to h
ave finished up at his sons home when they went to see Mrs. Lidster on th
e day before his death she again refused to allow her husband to return
. Had, had 14 Children. Mrs. Catherine Lidster of Smedley Road Cheetha
m said they had been married 36 years and 8 children were still living ou
t of a total of 14. There had been some trouble between then and he walk
ed out of the house in February 1947. He was bad tempered and quarrelsom
e and had many times knocked her about. She had obtained seperation orde
rs in the past all on account of the children. She knew her husband wa
s staying with her son and that he wanted to return home but this time sh
e was not going to have him back. A verdict of suicide whilst the balanc
e of his mind was recorded.
